The Saints Women’s 2nd Team is two for two in Scottish 1A after a convincing 18-7 win over last year’s 1A Champions, the University of Dundee. The Saints expected a tough match from Dundee as their
pool is a notoriously difficult place to win for visiting teams. In the early exchanges, neither side was able to take any sort of control. The Saints did score the first goal courtesy of fresher Amelia Downs.
However, Dundee responded well to draw level. Elle Futernick put away a goal to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. In the second quarter, the Saints started to get to grips with
the surroundings. Captain Brynn Walsh, Meg Hedrick and Futernick all scored twice in the second period to extend Saints lead to 8-3 at the half.
The Saints were proving difficult to break down and when Dundee did get some shots off, the Saints goalkeeper Rylan Scott was in top form making 14 saves. Further goals in the 3rd period from Walsh and Hedrick brought the score to 11-5 going into the final quarter. Goalkeeper Aithne Lawrence was having a rare outing in the field and was clearly enjoying the experience with two excellent goals to add to further strikes from Hedrick, Futernick and Walsh.
The Saints ran out 18-7 winners on the night and have certainly made a mark on Scottish 1A early in the season. The Saints’ next game in the Scottish Conference is on October 9th at home, New Olympia Dundee, against Edinburgh second team. Swim off starts at 2:15 pm. Come along and support!
